Recently, I have discovered the #urbansketchers community. I have joined the #urbansketchersbuffalo community and am trying to be more intentional in sketching on location. My own detailed style makes it a challenge to complete something entirely on location, but I am using it to learn a looser and quicker style of drawing.
What sets my urban sketches apart from my other work is that they are done on location according to the guidelines set forward by the Urban Sketcher's Manifesto. This can be challenging, given the limits of weather, time, resources, and other responsibilities that can get in the way, but I have come to really enjoy process. What is nice is that practicing urban sketching never leaves me bored, and is a life long hobby that I can enjoy with others.
Early Urban Sketches
We all began somewhere. When I was younger, I carried a sketchbook around with me. Here are a few on location sketches that I made back in the day as a reference for those of you who are just starting out on your path to Urban Sketching.
