About the ArtistI am a Criminal Justice major at Niagara University and as of this semester have finished completing my bachelor’s degree and will be graduating in a few days. My hope with this degree is to have a career in law enforcement and as an investigator. Aside from this, certain hobbies I am active in during my free time are playing music on the guitar, and sketching. I have been playing guitar for about 6 or 7 years and play either rock or blues music. With sketching, most of my artwork has been based around comic book sketches or sketches of cartoon characters. Mostly with sketching and drawing I will use pencil or colored pencil depending on how far I wanted to go with the art piece.

Reflections on Urban Sketching
Upon taking this class, I felt strong as an artist but wanted to expand my knowledge and ability and
challenge myself with different forms and medium of art. From this class, I have learned so much about the art of urban sketching and the different tools and techniques used when completing these types of sketches. What my main takeaways from this class have been overall is that urban sketching can be as realistic or as abstract as an artist wants and the many techniques artists use to simplify their sketches such as making squiggle lines to form the leaves on a tree. How I have evolved as an artist from this course is that I set out to improve various aspects of my work like improving on shading and using perspective in my sketches. I think now that the course has finished, I am very pleased with the progress I have made in these areas and will continue to improve on these skills to better myself as an artist. Lastly, while there were definitely moments that were difficult for me when it came to creating these sketches, I also learned to not make everything in the sketch “perfect” and when need be to draw simpler as well as making sure to have fun with creating an urban sketch.

Movie Night
This sketch was taken at the IMAX theatre in Williamsville. This was one of the first sketches I had ever done using pen and ink and I am for the most part very happy with how it came out, especially with the use of lighter to heavier points to illustrate the shaded regions. My favorite parts of the sketch would have to be the Regal Cinemas logo on top as well as the windows and shaded areas on the sketch. The story with this building is that relative to campus it is the closest IMAX theatre and made for a fun movie going experience for myself and my siblings who came up to meet me and watch The Batman, which on the IMAX screen made it all the more enjoyable for me and a good memory that is captured in this image
Dorm Room Pt. 1
This piece is a sketch of my dorm room at Niagara University looking out into the hallway. This piece is suppose to represent depth in an urban sketch and was my first urban sketch taken indoors as opposed to sketching outside. One of the things I like about this sketch is that I used pencil which as I previously mentioned is one of the tools I many use when creating art. I remember it was difficult portraying the perspective especially with the floor tiles, but I do think the doorway and looking out into the dorm hall makes up for it as it feels like the hallway goes on forever. This dorm is usually a double suite for two people but due to the pandemic, I had this room all to myself while I was at Niagara. While it did make things somewhat challenging with socializing, I did enjoy my time here and that I had my own personal space to myself to study and get schoolwork done.
Dorm Room Pt. 2
I would consider this artwork to be the second half of the previous piece. This was also taken from my dorm room only this time, it depicts the other half of the room where I have my bed and where my desk was that I did most of my work. This sketch was one of the first urban sketches I had using watercolor and I think out of all my watercolor sketches, this one turned out the best. My favorite parts of this sketch would have to be the my desk as it was fun to add all the things on it, as well as the window as I think both look visually well with portraying the depth and perspective of each item. I think the comparison between this sketch and the previous one is that while that one feels a little more depressed with the lack of color and the feeling of loneliness, this piece feels more vibrant and alive because to me this is the area where I mainly “lived” while at school.
Oma’s House
This sketch was from a photo I took of my time in the Netherlands in June 2018. I found this sketch to be both challenging and fun at the same time as I had never done a virtual sketch prior to this, but I reverted back to my own style of drawing in terms of tools, mixed with the tools I used over the course of the semester. The one part of this sketch that I wish looked a little bit better was the shaded areas as in the photo they appeared to be completely dark but I bet if I had sketched this on location, it would maybe not had been so dark. The following photo was of my grandmother’s house where she grew up in the Netherlands. I had not been to the Netherlands in some time and it is apart of my culture that was heavily promoted during my upbringing so it was nice to visit this house to see where she grew up and get an idea what it was like for her growing up in this country. Urban Sketching Kit
Over the course of the semester there were various tools we needed to complete certain sketches. In my
sketch kit, I needed the essentials being a sketch book and some pencils, but also new material for me that I had personally never used up until this point with the pen and ink set which included a brush, and a set of watercolors. All of this stuff was easily able to fir into my old computer case and made it easy for me to go to various areas and not have to carry all these items in my hands. I think going forward, the only thing I may do is switch up the watercolors and add colored pencils or even markers to experiment with other tools.
