About the ArtistI am a senior Art History and Museum Studies major at Niagara University. I have been drawing my whole life and took up painting in high school. I prefer to create abstract and colorful art with mixed media but will always appreciate sketching as I have sketchbooks of
many things from my life. |
Reflections on Urban SketchingIn this class, I learned how to go back to basics to make cleaner and better looking sketches. I learned how to draw buildings specifically, before I never liked to draw buildings. I also have a new appreciation for urban sketching as a profession, I did not know that was something let
alone a whole community before. My skills have developed as I learned new techniques to draw urban scenes. Taking the time to sit outside and just draw was a little hard for me but then I found it peaceful. As long as it was decent weather outside I was really enjoying being on site for drawing. |
Sketching on Location |
Jay’s Place
This is a store/diner near school. It is actually from a picture because when I took the picture, it was nighttime, snowing, and in the
middle of a parking lot. I really wanted to draw this building though because the picture was pretty cool. It was hard to draw snow falling it does not convey. It was done with pen instead of pencil (Not an urban sketch)

This is a view from my backyard at my parent’s house.(The cat is added and very unproportionate) Everything else is true to view. I tried to work with depth and proportions on other things like the trashcan and bush height. I added small details like the gravelly stone look of my driveway and the cracks in the garage too.
Urban Sketching Kit
These are my main tools for sketching. Pencil is essential because its the easiest way to get a fast shape but able to erase things later. I took the pens everywhere too because those are my preferred tools. Drawing with a pen is so much better to me. Pencil bothers me, texturally. Having a camera of some sort was also important to me so I could look back at the view in case things changed- which they always are.
