About the ArtistHi, my name is Destiny and I’m 18 years old. I’m a freshman at Niagara University and I am working on getting my bachelor’s degree in psychology. I have always loved everything to do with art. I do drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, and pretty much any type of art you can think of. I’ve been drawing and painting as long as I can remember. I didn’t start urban sketching until this year but I have really started to enjoy it.

Reflections on Urban SketchingI have learned so much about urban sketching in the past few months. I knew pretty much nothing about urban sketching before taking this class. Taking this class has really helped me improve my drawing skills. I’ve learned about different types of perspectives and how to draw using them. One of my favorite parts of taking this class was using different drawing tools. Before taking this class I pretty much limited myself to only using pencil for drawings. Five months ago there is absolutely no way I would have been confident enough to do a sketch completely in pen. I have come to accept the fact that it’s okay to make mistakes while drawing and it’s okay to start over if I don’t like how it’s turning out. All the skills I have learned are not only useful for urban sketching, they are useful for all types of art and just drawing in general. I’m very grateful for urban sketching because it has gotten me back into drawing again.

Sketching on LocationThis was a sketch I did of my little brothers play set. It was only the 2nd urban sketch I had ever done and I was quite proud of it.

Parked Car
I sketched this while sitting on my grandparents front porch. This was the first sketch I had ever done with a brush pen. It tells a story because cars are our main source of transportation. They help us get to where we want to go. This is my grandparents car so I have spent a lot of time in it.
Urban Sketching Kit
My kit includes everything that I used for urban sketching this semester. It includes a watercolor paper
sketchbook, watercolor paints, a mechanical pencil, an eraser, 2 different ink pens, and a pack of multicolored brush pens. My favorite technique is using only the mechanical pencil to draw with. I think it
gives me the most confidence because I can erase mistakes. I think it’s the most useful for shading also.
