About the ArtistI am a freshman in college majoring in Psychology. I enjoy camping, nature, shopping, music, etc. I have four dogs, and live at home with my parents and my younger brother. I am very shy, but once you get to know me I start to open up. As an artist I’ve never really had much experience with sketching as I’ve never felt comfortable with my skill level. This was discouraging for me, but this class has enabled me to try different techniques and expand on my skill levels. There have been a few sketches that I have done throughout this course so far that I actually really like. I look forward to building on them more as I go on!

Reflections on Urban SketchingDuring this class I learned more about different techniques for pens, brush pens, and also watercolor.
Although I really like how watercolor looks on paper, I think sketching with pens was my favorite. I enjoyed learning about depth and how to add texture to the sketches. Throughout the semester I tried to step outside of my comfort zone at times and try to learn the new techniques that were provided to us each week. During the semester I think I definitely improved on creating depth in my sketches, as well as drawing what I see rather than what I expect to be there. |
Sketching on Location |
Pole Barn
For this sketch, it was my very first one of the semester. Although I am not proud of it, I think it serves as a good comparison to my more recent sketches to see how far I have come along throughout this semester. I chose to sketch this structure because I felt that it was a good first challenge for myself, and enabled me to really see what I needed to work on.
East River
This sketch is the view that I have from my window of the Niagara River. This sketch was my second one of
the semester, and is actually one of my favorites. I think that it definitely shows some improvement in my sketching skills and I just love the scene. I always sit in front of my window and just look out at the water and

Hallway
I sketched a hallway for this one because I felt that it was good practice with depth and such. Although the
doors are a bit off, I just tried to focus on showing that the hallway was going away from me, and that the
doors got smaller as they got farther away. I tried to use angled lines to show this

Hallway 2.0
I sketched a hallway for this one because I felt that it was good practice with depth and such. Although the
doors are a bit off, I just tried to focus on showing that the hallway was going away from me, and that the
doors got smaller as they got farther away. I tried to use angled lines to show this walls going in different directions. I also used a little bit of shading to try and show that the picture frame on the wall was not flush against the wall. There is much to be improved on but I think it shows how my ability of showing depth in a sketch has progressed.

Urban Sketching Kit
In my kit, I keep a basic black pen, a black brush pen, and my watercolor palette. I prefer to use the black
pen, however occasionally I will use a brush pen to practice. I like the looks of watercolor the best, however I
need some more practice before I will feel comfortable using it. Some of my favorite techniques are using
vanishing points and shading. I feel like both of these techniques add a lot to a sketch, especially with
shading; because you’re able to place an emphasis on the important parts of your sketch
