About the ArtistApparently in my elementary school days I was an average student but an awesome artist. At least that's what my teachers and parents made me think. My works of art always ended up on the refrigerator at home.
In high school I was the "art editor" for the school newspaper. In college I discovered other ways to get attention. Theatre and broadcasting. After 50 years in professional theatre and more than 40 years In broadcasting, I'm rediscovering the joy of making refrigerator art. It's my meditation. |
Reflections on Urban Sketching
The act of drawing is more important than what I draw. That's what I have learned. Only by putting pen to paper, over and over again can I move forward and improve. With Urban Sketching, the artist is capturing a moment, rather than "creating a masterpiece." Some of the really wonderful Urban Sketchers we have seen through this course have shown that the act of creating a sketch is "magical", that there is no right or wrong and that you must first sketch to please yourself. I'm on board with all of that.
This course has helped me define what I'm most interested in artistically-which is drawing, painting and making pictures for my enjoyment. What I appreciate most and probably benefited most from the "self-guided" nature of this course. Exploring other artists, watching videos and reading books is something I will continue long after this Urban Sketching course is over.

Too Many Windows
This was downtown Buffalo, across the street from where I work. I have looked at that facade of the old gasworks on W. Genesee Street for thirty plus years. It was one of my first attempts to draw on location. Mostly what I remember was drawing all those windows in City Hall. Yikes.
Urban Sketching Kit
I prefer the lines that you can get with fountain pens and calligraphy pens, but I often resort to the Micron type for more control. My water colors are nothing fancy-and I usually paint with one round brush. Since I still pencil sketch first-mechanical pencils are easier to deal with and must always have a rubber eraser handy.
