There is a need for dialog on many issues and the Student Affairs Professionals group has admittedly struggled with it. I don’t know Ann Marie Klotz well enough to be able to judge her motives or intent in writing her post. However, the problematic impact of the assumptions made in the blog post unfortunately invalidates the opinions and identities of others within the group. Here are a few of my thoughts on the subject:

Sadly, I turned off notifications to that group a very long time ago. I connect with people in the Res Life group but the larger Student Affairs one is pretty impossible to have a conversation in, which is sad because it limits me to dialogue within my own institution. Not that I don't have diverse people to speak with here but it's not a cast of thousands. The simplest comments are immediately attacked and that's not how I want to interact. Challenge me, yes. Stop someone in their tracks trying to communicate because they didn't use all the possible pronouns, no.
