About the ArtistI’m a junior Art History with Museum Studies major. I hope to go into art conservation so I try to take every opportunity to try a new style or
medium of art and expand my knowledge and understanding! Reflections on Urban SketchingThis class has taught me a lot about drawing outside of a studio or controlled environment. It’s nice to go out and sketch public scenes as they are instead of posing things ideally. I’ve also been able to develop my skills with watercolor and perspective which has been nice. Overall it was wonderful to learn about the urban sketching community as a whole and see how helpful and welcoming everyone is! There’s lots of resources of sketchers sharing their process and tips that are very useful in improving. I definitely hope to keep urban sketching, and maybe one day also share my art with others!

O’Shea Quad
I sketched this at a picnic table outside of O’Shea hall on campus, where many students pass through every day since it’s the center between the parking lots, classes, dorms, and fitness center. I feel like this piece marked the point in which I began to better understand and utilize watercolor.
My Lovely Plants! (and messy room)
I drew this scene inside my dorm room because it’s part of my daily life. Everyday I wake up and turn to see my plants. This area is sort of a hotspot in my room so it’s sort of messy but I think it looks lived in and I like the little bits of evidence of life scattered throughout.
Urban Sketching Kit
Although I’m making an effort to be more confident with ink, I usually start a sketch using pencil, so I always like to bring my mechanical pencil and an eraser with me. Next I have 3 different fineliners and a brush pen that I use in combination when outlining and possible shading. I then have a palette of watercolors I use, I just carry around two brushes because I find that I can achieve most effects with either size and don’t see a need for more. And I just use an old nail polish remover container for water. Most of the time I also keep a ruler with me, but whether I actually use it depends on whether I feel like using it or if I remembered it. The sketchbook or paper I use depends on what I’m doing. My small sketchbooks are very convenient, but the paper isn’t suited for watercolor; so if I plan to add color I will either grab my large sketchbook or cut some paper out to paint on a clipboard (with the edges taped down).
