FAA 305: Urban Sketching Exhibition

About the ArtistI am a senior at Niagara University studying nursing. I have always enjoyed art and love to do it in my free time. I took as many art classes in high school as possible. The past few years in
college I haven’t had as much opportunity to take classes outside of my major but I finally got the opportunity to take urban sketching! I love it and it has really allowed me to expand on some skills I haven’t really touched before such as ink and watercolor, as before I basically only used pencil and acrylic paint. ReflectionsI think this class has really not only expanded the tools I use to create art but the subjects I choose to sketch. Before this class the majority of my sketches were of animals, some landscapes and drawing from pictures. Now I’ve learned so much more about sketching on site or sketching buildings, people, aka urban scenes. I have really started to grasp how to properly use ink and watercolor which I am very excited to continue using as mediums I think they create such a different look to a sketch that I was not used to but have come to love.

Metro Rails |
Urban Sketch
|
This is the view down the metro rails near our apartment in Buffalo NY. I chose to draw this location because for some reason I love looking down the metro rail. It gives you a view straight through the city. Although this sketch doesn’t make it look too luxurious, we always like to go down and see the lights off in the distance.
Aunt JoJo |
Virtual Sketch
|
We had a little leeway this specific week for our assignment. I chose to draw a picture of my aunt Joanne. She has been an inspiration to me for quite some time and is part of the reason I chose to go into nursing. It has been something I have been wanting to sketch for a while and finally had the time and opportunity to do so. I sketched this virtually in Buffalo, NY.
