About the ArtistHello, I’m Juhyeon and you can call me June. My major is English but I also like drawing and appreciating art pieces in the art museum. My favorite artist is Claude Monet. I love the peaceful mood and pastel colors of his artwork. So I want to learn to use not only watercolors but also acrylic paints later.

Reflections on Urban Sketching
Before I took this class, I drew several sketches as a hobby but the subjects are individual so the background and scenery were not included. So it was hard for me to choose what to draw first when I drew drawings for the urban sketches. To overcome this difficulty, I sketched people first then I sketched the background and windows. And I think If I practice more I can draw better through this class.
In one sketch, it was hard for me to draw a bunch of boughs because each of these has different shapes and thicknesses. Also, there are many twigs. So I choose to focus on boughs and skip some twigs. And at first, I had no idea how to describe the surface of the trunk. And as I kept drawing, I tried to draw vertical lines to express the grain of the tree. I think I improved my sketching skills by drawing the scenery and trees. Also, when I draw the watercolor sketch, it was hard for me to control the amount of water. But I learned some of the techniques to control water in this class by drawing various watercolors.

Subway in the Gally
I sketched at the Gally because I usually stayed in this place when I’m waiting for the next class or doing the homework. Many NU students stay in Gally and eat Subway sandwiches. And I also stayed in Gally to eat or do assignments. And a few of my friends work at Subway in the afternoon. So I feel like my sketch tells our campus life and my friends’ life. When I sketch this, it was hard for me to draw the composition of the floor and the window. And it was hard to capture the moment because passing people and staff kept moving.
The garden with green chairs
I sketched a photo of the garden in Paris so this is not an urban sketch. I traveled to Paris during spring break with my friends. I visited the garden and took photos of the fountain and people. Actually, we missed our flight when we came back to school. So, we had an extra day in Paris. The weather was good so we went to the garden in front of the Louvre museum. It was unexpected, but we really enjoyed
our extra day and it was a good experience. Also, I love this photo so I choose to draw this as a virtual sketch. When I draw this sketch, it was hard for me to draw a group of people who is sitting far away from me, because they are too small in the photo to recognize their own pose.

Sunshine afternoon
During the Easter break I visited my friend’s house so I sketched the backside of her house. We had a great time in that house. We cooked ourselves and enjoyed the sunshine at that place and played some board games. Also, we took a walk around the lake of Ontario and it was so beautiful. It was a short break but it was a good experience for me and my friends. When I draw this, It was hard for me to draw a pile of wood logs and control the amount of water. So the paint on the tree smudged and mixed with the blue color of the sky.
Alumni Chapel
This was my first urban sketch. I sketched on the 2nd floor of the Acad. I selected this place because I can see the Alumni Chapel through the big window. I like the large circle shape windows of the Alumni Chapel, so I wanted to draw the outside of that building. It is one of the campus buildings and I live in the Clet Hall. So my sketch tells where I live and the campus life of NU students. Also, I’ve never taken a class in the Acad, so it was a new experience to sit here and do my homework. When I draw this sketch, it was hard for me choosing what to draw first because it was my first urban sketch. And the leaves of plants are many so it was hard to draw the detail and shadows of this but it was also fun.
Urban Sketching Kit
I preferred Faber Castell Artist Pens. When I draw, I sketched with my pencil first, then I re-sketched with my artist pens on the pencil sketch. It looks much better because it is darker than the pencil line and it organizes the sketch lines. And it is waterproof so, it is very comfortable when I use watercolors on that sketches.
