About the ArtistI am a Junior in the Computer and Information Sciences program at Niagara. I am expecting to graduate in May of 2024. I have always had an interest in both computers as well as art and sketching. Since I was little I have always been doodling and sketching but never knew if I had the ability to actually properly draw. I took up sketching within the last year or two and I’ve been developing my skills on my own time through my own art. I decided to take up this class to challenge myself and see if my art will hold up given different media and techniques and I feel confident when I say they did.

Reflections on Urban SketchingI have learned many different methods to create and work with art media to create the different art pieces I have always wanted to make. I feel my skills have improved immensely since starting this class. I have found that the art pieces I started before this class are a lot more rough than the pieces I have created since then. I also never realized that the art I was already creating is considered to be urban sketching because I drew them all mostly in person on location.

Sketching on Location |
DePaul in the Daytime
I sketched this piece in front of DePaul on a cloudy day. It was right before a rain storm was about to hit but I was able to capture an image to finish it inside if needed. This is my first art piece I made using watercolor and it is a bit rough but I still like it nonetheless. I could have gone a bit lighter on the black but overall I think it’s a nice piece.
Frank Lloyd Wright Martin House
I created this piece on a whim after visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright Martin house in Buffalo with my girlfriend. I’ve always thought the house had really nice looking architecture from the outside as I have passed by it numerous times in the past. However, we went to go visit the house out of the blue while in Buffalo and decided to see if we could tour it, and we had made it right in time for one of the tours, exactly 3 minutes
before it started. I was able to gain a much better appreciation for the house not only as an architectural masterpiece, but as an art piece in and of itself. I was able to get a photo of the outside of the house as I did not have my art supplies with me at the time.

Urban Sketching Kit
I really like using the mechanical pencil in my kit. I use a Zebra Delguard because it is the perfect size of lead for any sketch I want to use it for, and it has a feature that makes it harder to break the lead if you press down hard on it because it can retract using a spring. I also like using my Staedtler permanent liner as it gives consistent and thin lines for penwork. Lastly I have a little metal mechanic ruler that is great for keeping
