Kwayla Midget |
About the ArtistMy name is Kwayla Midget and I’m a Sociology major and I’m minoring in political science. I found my
love of drawing in my first year of college during finals week I needed something to do that could make me relax and destress. I started out traditionally and then found out that digital art suits me best. I always loved to study people and how the world we live in affects us. I found it fascinating that simple interactions can have a profound effect on people. When I started to draw seeing that my art could have the same effect made me want to develop my skills even more. |
Reflections on Urban Sketching
As I took this class, I have learned so much and I expanded my artist skills. Urban sketching helped me add more realism to my drawings. I have always struggled with background and buildings and taking this class has made me better at drawing them. I never knew how to add depth and value to my drawings usually adding to much or adding to little now I know with just one color or two I can make my look good without going overboard. I never heard of ink techniques before but adding them to my drawings gave my trees, buildings, and sidewalks so much more detail. I can confidently saw that this class has improved my drawing skills and I can’t wait to apply what I have learned in the future.
A Perfect Autumn Day
Since I was a child, I have always loved to take walks. Me and my mother would take walks around my neighborhood people watching and just taking in the environment around us. I found that when I did these walks it was a de-stressing way to unwind when life got hard. This is the view from a little sidewalk that’s away from my house. There are a lot of trees and when fall comes the trees change color and in looks so beautiful. As college winds down I find that I take more of these walk taking in the scenery.
My House in Full View
This is my house. We moved here from my old house in 2014 and I instantly feel in love with my new home. I had a room that I could decorate, and we had a wider living area, so it made moving around the house easier. When my nieces come over, we play in the backyard and I let my dog out (on leash of course) to run around and stretch his legs. I know in the future when me and my family move I will be sad to leave but I know without a doubt I made good memories here.
A Winter’s Wonderland
(Unfortunately, when I finished sketching this my pages broke in half so my apologies if you see my nail and watercolor container in my picture, I was holding the drawing together) I sketched this drawing up the street from my house. I used gouache paint for the snow. There is a church, bank, and thrift store and I walk pass them every day to when I must go to the store. In winter my city sometimes puts lights on the lamp poles that are by the road and it makes the street look so pretty. I love talking walks on this street because you can see people coming and going; it a calming atmosphere.
Urban Sketching Kit
My preferred tools when are urban sketch are my lead pencil, ink pens, watercolors paints, and watercolor tape. I like to block off my drawings with my watercolor tape I feel that it gives me more control over my drawings. Working with a pan set is nice because I have a built-in palette to mix my paints. My favorite techniques I like to use when I’m urban sketching is using my ink techniques to add more realism to my drawings, wet on wet technique to make trees or other foliage, and gradient wash to for my skies.
